Buckeye Water Resources pays $1.75 per square foot for residential turf removal, with the rebate capped at 50% of your total project cost. The minimum project size is 200 sq ft. The annual program pool is $10,000 — funding is first-come, first-served each fiscal year.
Your rebate cannot exceed half of what you paid for the grass removal and xeriscape installation. For example, if your total project costs $1,500, the maximum rebate is $750 even if the sq ft calculation would yield more.
Yes. You must call the Water Resources Conservation Coordinator at 623-349-6195 to schedule an in-person pre-approval appointment before removing any grass. The coordinator visits your property for measurements and before photos.
After your project is complete, you participate in a 1-year water consumption monitoring period. Buckeye Water tracks your water use to measure savings compared to before the conversion.
Your project must be completed within the current fiscal year (July 1–June 30). Projects that run past June 30 may not qualify for that year's funding.
Yes — Buckeye is one of the few Arizona programs that allows artificial or synthetic turf as a replacement for natural grass. The synthetic turf must be purchased and installed within the current fiscal year (July 1–June 30). Most other rebate programs (Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, etc.) explicitly disqualify artificial turf, so verify with your specific city before assuming it qualifies.
The rebate covers itemized costs for: post-emergent herbicide treatment, turf conversion and site preparation, irrigation modification, and delivery/disposal/equipment. You must provide detailed receipts for every item submitted for reimbursement.
